How Couples Therapy Can Address Sexual Dysfunction and Reignite Passion

Couples therapy with a trained relationship therapist who also has training in sex therapy? Yes, please! Did you know that not all couples therapists train in sex therapy? According to The Northwest Institute of Intimacy, "only 5% of therapists and healthcare professionals are trained in human sexuality". In a couple's work, intimacy and sexuality are potent aspects of being human! When clients come into therapy with a trained sex therapist, they have the chance to bring more of themselves into therapy.

At Compass Healing Project people will find a competent therapist who can help you with your relationship and sexual goals. When somatics, attachment, trauma resolution, and sex therapy work together, the work is profound. This is what we do here and it works!

Embracing All Parts of Self

The different parts of self, that might have been left at the door at another office, are essential parts of self. Gender expression, sex traits, sexual orientation, sexual experiences, and diversity of sexuality are part of who we are. When a therapist has training in sex therapy, the client can further integrate, fully express, and be considered more of themselves. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a healing environment to me.

The inclusion and integration of this part of self, like our inclusion of the body, the heart, mind, and spirit, is true holistic care. This type of care has the potential to heal shame and trauma associated with sex, pleasure, eroticism, gender, and sensuality. For Sexpert Therapist Dr. Jenni Skyler at The Intimacy Institute, "sex is the symptom". She explains how "sex is a data point for the underlying dynamic in a relationship" (Dr. Jenni Skyler, personal communication, July 29th, 2024). This data point is a pivotal gateway to layers of healing and layers of potential.

Couples therapy gives couples and relationships a chance to address issues in intimacy. When there are sexual issues, such as desire discrepancy, low desire, sexual trauma, and the like, we can work on it!

Ways Couples Therapy Can Help Overcome Sexual Issues and Rekindle Intimacy and Passion:

Couples Therapy Creates Specific Time and Energy in Session to Unpack, Understand, and Learn New Ways of Relating.

Going to couples therapy is a perfect time to bring up the sexual issues and any desire problems. The time spent in therapy, to learn, unpack, and shift dance steps will get the ball rolling. Dedicating time with your partner shows them you are willing, open, and curious. All very attractive qualities in a partner if you ask me. A lot of sexual and intimacy issues come from a lack of communication and education. Other issues stem from sexual trauma, social conditioning, and poor intimacy skills. All of which can be addressed in the therapy space.

Couples Therapy Gives You a Plan to Put in Place Changes to Have the Relationship and Sex Life You Want.

Sexual issues like low desire and lack of passion are some of the most frequent complaints in couples therapy. To fix and correct this in a relationship, we need everyone on board, and willing to make changes. Low desire in one person is a symptom of the relationship, not only the person. Healing plans might include getting uncomfortable to begin to talk about attraction issues. These plans can give you strategies for sexual dysfunction. Interventions can be curated to increase the heat, passion, and eroticism. For some, couples therapy gives the permission to say what they like or don't like in and outside of the bedroom.

Couples Therapy Challenges Couples to Center Intimacy and Pleasure in Their Lives.

Who wouldn't want a little bit more pleasure in their life? When we center pleasure in a relationship we are de-centering the libido killing "busy-ness". We are resisting our culture's push for more. The only "more" we are having is more pleasure! Pleasure and connection duels with bills, kids, in-laws, and jobs for attention. Through creating more equity in our relationships there is a higher likelihood our partners will be more open to working on sex. We can carve out specific strategies for couples to apply to get the desire and arousal gas pedal going. We can do this while also creating resilience around those bills, kids, in-laws, and jobs. By putting in place interventions that support nervous system resilience, there is more energy freed up for intimacy.

Couples Therapy Mediates and Guides Conversations For Couples That Are Stuck.

Many couples go round and round...and around again without any change in sight. Couples therapy contains the elements for relationship alchemy to take place. It has a container with a beginning and an end, with someone who knows the path, and the couple who wants their relationship to be different. With these elements in place, the transformation is a matter of time. The work gets juicier when the relationship and the people involved show up with openness and willingness.
